Information

The Schools within the College of Arts and Humanities invite applications in the following broad areas:

School of Creative Studies and Media
Journalism and risk in the age of digital, global media, and in East Asian visual culture (from a variety of visual media and cultural forms, such as photography, fine art, film, and television, in a range of geographic locations, particularly, however, Japan, Korea and China.

School of English
The fields of History of the Book, Creative Writing, Medieval Literature, Early Modern literature, Welsh Writing in English, and in nineteenth and twentieth century literature.

School of History, Welsh History and Archaeology
Topics in the fields of history or archaeology, with a preference given to research related to Wales in one form or another.

School of Linguistics
Bilingualism and/or Cognitive Linguistics.

School of Modern Languages
'Memory and identity in contemporary Europe', especially topics that seek to combine the study of memory with questions of place, generation, ritual or the urban environment. Projects can relate to one or more language area.

School of Music
Twentieth/twenty-first century music (history, analysis, performance, composition; preferably a combination of two or more of these areas).

School of Philosophy and Religion
Literary criticism and the Bible; Feminist approaches to the Bible; Biblical Ethics; Philosophy of Religion; Philosophy and Psychoanalysis; 19th C. European Philosophy; Existentialism; Political Philosophy and International Affairs.

School of Welsh
Welsh literature, language, creative writing, society and culture.

* Applicants are encouraged to discuss potential projects for suitability with individual Schools and, where possible, prospective supervisors, prior to submission. Details of relevant staff to contact are listed on School web pages.

Anniversary Scholarships Application Procedure

The application deadline is 23 March 2012

To apply, please complete an on-line University Postgraduate Application Form available here.

In addition to the application form and its requirements, applicants applying for a College of Arts and Humanities studentship are required to provide electronically:

  • A statement (max 500 words) of your relevant research skills (such as computer skills, relevant prior experience, the title and a brief description of any previous graduate study).
  • A synopsis (max 1000 words) of your main research interests and proposed research project. In doing so, please also stipulate to which School you are applying, and the prospective supervisor with whom you may have discussed your project.

The on-line application form and accompanying documents must be submitted by 23 March 2012.

* YOU MUST MAKE CLEAR that you are applying for a Bangor University Anniversary Scholarship. In answer to Question 3, under Check list Item 6 of 10 of the online application form (‘Are you applying for a Bangor University advertised Research Project or Studentship? If so, please state where you heard about the Research Project or Studentship AND write the full project title here)', applicants are required to enter the following text: 2012 'ANNIVERSARY SCHOLARSHIP' then THE PROJECT TITLE/SCHOOL OF STUDY. If possible, please also state where you heard about the Research Project or Studentship.
