Research conducted at the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography

Environment Centre Wales - Environment Centre for Wales is a partnership venture between Bangor University and the Natural Environment Research Council’s Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH)

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 90% of our research was rated as being of at least ‘international quality’, including 45% at least ‘internationally excellent’

The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography maintains a world-class reputation for research. Bangor University achieved a very strong performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise of UK universities in our subject area. We submitted 35 staff to the Agriculture assessment panel with research covering the fields of Plant and Soil Science; Natural Resources Ecology, Conservation and Management; and Crop and Forest Science. The panel rated 90% of our research as being of at least 'international quality', including 45% that was at least 'internationally excellent'. We were especially pleased that the RAE result graded the whole of our 'research environment' as internationally excellent, recognising our important role in postgraduate research and teaching, and the very high quality of our research facilities.

To help put this result in context, Bangor University's submission was scored equal to that of four other universities well known for the prestige of their research in the RAE panel's subject area: Reading University and Newcastle University (Agriculture) and Cambridge University and Liverpool University (Veterinary Science).

Our research mission is to provide a scientific basis for sustainable agriculture, forestry and conservation of natural resources, through three specific objectives:

  1. to advance knowledge of the environmental and biological basis of land use through fundamental research in plant and soil science
  2. to inform natural resource management for sustainable production and environmental quality, by integrating biophysical and socio-economic processes at the ecosystem scale (natural resource ecology, conservation and management)
  3. to address human needs for food and materials by advancing knowledge of crop genetics, sustainable production systems and plant material properties (crop and forest science).

Our research is strongly interdisciplinary and involves close collaboration across the land use, environmental, biological and chemical disciplines.
Please look at our current Research Pages for more information on our research activities.
