What are SSCs?

SSCs are placements undertaken by medical students at Cardiff University in Years 3 and 5. These placements are 8 or 9 weeks in duration. Students may choose what they want to study and where they want to undertake these placements, Bangor University is an increasing popular option. SSCs complement core teaching in the medical undergraduate curriculum by permitting students to study areas of particular interest to them and also introduce them to research skills.

If you would like to contact the School of Medical Sciences for further information about SSC's then please email medsciences@bangor or phone 01248 383244

What Projects are available at Bangor University?

Year 3 SSCs (9 weeks) and Year 5 SCPs (8 weeks) are available at Bangor University.

Year 3 Student Selected Components (SSC)

The 9 week projects in Year 3 of the medical undergraduate programme embrace activities that are clinic, community and laboratory based. Research groups are active in many areas and some modules may therefore have a research orientation. Students are able to study a particular topic or topics and pursue their interests in some depth under the guidance of a tutor with specialist knowledge of the field.

Students can also arrange their own “unique” SSC in an area that particularly interests them and indeed are strongly encouraged to do so.

Year 5 Senior Clinical Projects (SCP)

The Senior Clinical Project consists of an 8 week period of in-depth study of clinical practice in an area of interest to the student. This will usually be based on practical clinical work as a case series of patients seen by the student, or, in the case of laboratory-based work, a series of findings relating to a problem, or group of problems.

As with the Year 3 SSCs, students can also arrange their own “unique” SCP in an area of particular interest.
