Stefan Machura joined the school in October 2006. Initially, he studied
sociology and political science in Bochum (Germany). His doctoral dissertation
dealt with the control of public enterprises. In 1992, he started teaching
sociology of law, sociology and political science at the Ruhr-Universität
Bochum. The perceived fairness of trials and the portrayal of the legal
system in popular media formed major points of his research. Since 2000,
he is co-editor of the German journal "Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie".
In the same year, he passed the second dissertation (Habilitation, Public
Management) in Munich, to be followed by a Habilitation (Political Science)
in Bochum in 2005. From 2000 to 2008, he was speaker of the sociology
of law section of the German Sociological Association (DGS) and still
serves as committee member.
Since 2010, Stefan Machura is main editor (Schriftleiter) of the “Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie”. He represents Bangor University at the Management Board of the Welsh Centre for Crime and Social Justice and directs the School’s criminology MA degrees.
