When will I hear about the bursary payments for 2010/11?

Current undergraduate students from the UK or EU who are to receive bursary payments during 2010/11, will be contacted by letter. This will be a letter from the University’s Vice-Chancellor which will be sent to your home address (NOT your term time address). Letters will start going out from late late January 2011, as the bursary payments for 2010/11 are assessed and approved.

Why haven’t I heard about my bursary entitlements for 2010/11?

In the first instance you need to check whether or not the letter has been received at your home address. If not, then there may be several reasons why the letter has not yet been set out, for example :

  • You may not have completed a PN1/PR1 application form for your Local Authority or the SLC. You must complete this form to enable the University to determine your eligibility for a bursary. In addition, you must have given consent on this form for your information to be shared with the Student Loan Company (SLC), who are responsible for the administration and distribution of bursary payments on behalf of the University. If you have any question about the PN1/PR1 form or the consent clause, please contact the Money Support Unit.  You can obtain a PN1/PR1 from your Local Authority (Welsh Students) or download a form from www.studentfinancewales.co.cuk.  English Student should complete their PN1/PR1 on-line at: www.studentfinanceengland.co.uk.
  • The bursary assessment may not have been carried out yet by your LA or the SLC or approved by the University. The assessment and approval of our Bursaries will being at the end of January 2011 and continue until July 2011, as soon as the assessment has been carried out and approved then a letter is sent.
  • There may well be an issue regarding your assessment or eligibility for a bursary. For example, some first year students will still need to have their household income verified (particularly if a parent is self-employed) and this can delay the assessment process.
  • If you have changed courses or your mode of study, then your eligibility for a particular bursary will be reviewed, which again will delay the assessment and approval process

Are there other reasons why I might not have heard about any bursary entitlement for 2010/11?

Other reasons why you may not have heard about any bursary entitlements include:

  • Failure to confirm your attendance. You must confirm your attendance at the start of the second semester to receive your bursary - failure to do so will mean that the bursary payment will be suspended until the registration process is complete.
  • Outstanding debts to the University. A bursary may be suspended if a student has an outstanding debt to the University, 14 days prior to the bursary payment date. A debt is defined as any University debt (e.g. tuition fee, Hall fee) where a student pays privately, and has failed to make arrangements to pay or has broken a promise to pay an amount on an agreed date.
  • You may not be eligible for a bursary. Bursaries are only available to full-time, UK/EU undergraduate students who started their first year of higher education on or after 1 September 2007have a liability to pay tuition fees, and entitlement will depend on criteria such as household income and/or course studied. For instance, students in receipt of other bursary payments (e.g. NHS, Health & Social Care Council) are not eligible for the bursaries scheme operated by the University. Please read the terms and conditions for more details about the 2010/11 Undergraduate Bursaries Scheme.

When will the 2010/11 bursary payments be made?

Bursary awarded will be paid on the 1st March 2011 in the first instance. They will be paid in one instalment direct into your bank account. The exception to this is the Start Up Bursary which will n be paid on the 29th October 2010.

What if I don’t receive the payment on the expected date?

In the event of a final assessment not having been made by the bursary payment date, payment will be made as soon as possible after this date when the final LEA/SLC assessment is received.

What is the final date for 2010/11 bursary payments?

The final date for any bursary payment is 31 July 2011. The final date by which a student’s eligibility for any particular bursary must have been assessed is 15 July 2011. After these dates any entitlement to a bursary will cease.
