A married couple who studied Banking and Finance at Bangor University have both graduated with First Class Honours degrees. Patrycja and Piotr Danisewicz , from Poland, describe the experience of studying at Bangor Business School as 'very exciting.'

Postgraduate Huw is named top student

Huw Tomos Pritchard with Professor Dermot CahillHuw Tomos Pritchard has been named as the best postgraduate law student at Bangor University.

23 year old Huw, from Bethesda, has just completed his LLM in Law and Devolved Governments at the University's School of Law. Bangor is the first university to offer a Masters programme on Devolved Governments, which is what led to Huw pursing his postgraduate studies here.

Amy Fanning, 23, from Wallasey on the Wirral has graduated with a First Class honours degree in Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice, despite suffering from a chronic illness. Amy is now recovering from recent neurosurgery but hopes to continue with her studies with the aim of working within the field of Youth Justice in future.

David BavinDavid’s African Adventure marks university highlight

David Bavin from Chichester has graduated with the Sir Alfred Lewis Prize, awarded to the best final year student who has completed a degree course at Bangor University’s School of Biological Sciences.

David travelled the world for over the year before coming to Bangor to study a BSc in Zoology/Marine Zoology; visiting Tonga, Australia, New Zealand, China, Myanmar and India. A keen scuba diver, he chose his degree course because of its emphasis on marine study.

A graduate from the School of Law, who spent her summers at sea, hopes to use her degree to improve maritime safety.

Chaynee Joanna Hodgetts, 21 from Birmingham, came to Bangor to study Ocean Sciences as it was the only UK University to have its own sea-going ship, the Prince Madog. After her first year, Chaynee decided to transfer to the second year of the Law degree at the School of Law. She now hopes to combine both interests as she graduates with an Upper Second Class Honours degree.

Ben overcomes illness to become Best Student

Ben WinterbournA student who suffered from illness during his studies not only graduates this month, five years after starting his degree, but has also been named the Best Student within his academic school.

Ben Winterbourn, 24 from Norwich is “delighted to be graduating” with a BSc in Geography. Following his second year, Ben had an operation and was not in good health for his third year. He suspended his studies twice, but this year he completed his course and graduated this month.

A graduating student at Bangor University who has spent her summer breaks volunteering at a game park in South Africa hopes to continue to work with animals following her graduation.

Chloe Silverwood from Burntwood in Staffordshire, who has received a BSc hons degree in Psychology, has a passion for animals that led to her working at the Seaview Game and Lion Park near Port Elizabeth.

Electronic Engineering graduate Stefan Roberts from Old Colwyn has won a place on a four year graduate placement scheme with multinational corporation, Thales. Stefan will be working as a Systems Engineer in the company’s Aerospace Division, working on a number of projects, from radar to flight simulators.

As well as graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences from Bangor University, Jessica Fletcher a 22 year old graduate from Little Sutton, Cheshire is a multi- prize winning student.

She has won the School of Biological Sciences Prize 2010 which is awarded for the highest marks in the School of Biological Sciences for which she received £200 and the IBMS President’s Prize 2010 for the best graduating Biomedical Science student, for which she received £100.

A prize winning graduate who has achieved a First Class Honours degree is moving on to a new role this month as a Sabbatical Officer at Bangor University’s Students’ Union

Richard Gorman from Hooton in Ellesmere Port has been elected Vice President – Societies & Sustainability for the next academic year. His role with the Union ties in well with his Sustainable Development degree course, and he is looking forward to the challenge.

Dr Sam’s Polar experience

Image of SamA student who had to get to grips with firing a rifle and driving a snowmobile in order to study for his PhD degree graduated with a Doctorate.

Sam Rastrick originally chose to study his undergrad degree in Bangor because of its world reputation for the study of marine biology and the excellent reputation of the Miles Dyslexia Unit who supported Sam throughout his higher education.

His research took Sam to both the Arctic and Antarctic in order to study amphipods; small shrimp-like crustaceans that are at the bottom of the food web.

Police Sergeant swaps his uniform for a cap and gown

Alan JonesA Police Sergeant from Conwy has his “lifetime ambition realised” as he graduates from Bangor University with a degree in Law.

Alan Jones, 47, who is a serving Police Sergeant with 28 years service, having served in London and North Wales, as well as holding a number of national posts, has gained an upper second class LLB (Hons) degree from the University. As part of his current duties and responsibilities he is working within a drafting team tasked with developing a new policy document for the police service in  England and Wales.

Building an orphanage is next challenge for Award winning graduate Holly

Holly Parry, from Holyhead, has graduated with a BSc degree in Coastal Geography- and received the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology Wales Branch “Young Marine Professional  Achievement Award of 2009/10”  and a cheque for £100  when she graduated from Bangor University.

As she is profoundly deaf, Holly was provided with an interpreter who signed what the lecturers were saying during lectures and practicals. The University’s Student Support Services also provided Holly with a note taker as she was unable to take notes whilst watching the interpreter.

Kimberley Pemberton, a Bangor University Lingusitics student has been awarded one of the University’s most prestigious Prizes. The twenty-one year old student from Bolton was awarded one of five Dr John Robert Jones Prizes awarded to the best graduating student across all disciplines within the University. She received a cheque for £1,000.

A Heritage Management graduate has completed a family hat-trick by gaining a PhD from Bangor University.

Christopher Stiefvater-Thomas from Beaumaris pursued his PhD at Bangor’s School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography, studying the historic sites of Amlwch and Parys Mountain and the plans to develop them for tourism.

Promising future lies ahead for Bangor graduate

A talented student who is graduating with a First Class Honours Law degree from Bangor University has won a scholarship to study to become a barrister.  Stephen Clear, 21, from London will take up his studies for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at BPP Law School.

However, before moving on to the Bar, Stephen will be remaining in Bangor for one more year to study a Masters in Public Law and Devolved Government.

Bursary win helps Lowri continue with her studies

A Bangor University Geography graduate has won a bursary from the NFU Mutual to assist her with her postgraduate studies.

Lowri Wyn Francis from Llangefni is one of only six students throughout the UK to have been awarded the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust Centenary Award, which has been set up to help postgraduate students of agriculture related subjects.

Lois Prysor Jones from Arenig, near Bala is this year’s winner of the Dr John Robert Jones Welsh Student award at Bangor University this year. This is one of five main University prizes awarded each year.  This Prize is for the best graduating student from Wales across all the University’s disciplines. Lois received a cheque for £1,000 at her recent graduation ceremony.

Michelle Hamlet from Skelmersdale, Lancashire who is an employee of Bangor University’s Centre for Careers and Opportunities (CCO) made it through to the national final of the 2010 Student Employee Awards, having been named as the winner of the Wales heat.

Third Lifelong Learning student publishes book

RhysA BA Literature and Creative Writing student at Bangor University’s Lifelong Learning has recently published his first book. Keinc, in English ‘branch’, is a debut collection that twists between mythology and relationships, between language and form, exploring subjects from the four branches of the Mabinogi to Dostoevsky versus Kerouac.

Rhys Trimble, who lives in Bethesda, is a bilingual poet, performer, tutor and editor. The 32 year old was born in Livingstone Zambia and brought up in Gwent and Pontneddfechan South Wales. Rhys has been published in many journals including Poetry Wales, Tears in the Fence, Seventh Quarry, Coffee House Poetry, Aesthetica and Skald.

A mother of 3 from Bangor is graduating this week with First Class Honours after successfully balancing her family life with her studies and completing a part time degree in Literature with Creative Writing at Bangor University.

Beth Nicol, 43, left school after studying her ‘A’ levels and after a year at University studying Education, she gave up the course and went to work in administration. She was working at the University when she was approached by Lifelong Learning asking her if she was interested in studying part time.

Karen ParryWrexham mum celebrates degree success

Karen Parry from Wrexham left school at 16 with a small number of GCSEs and worked in various manufacturing factories.  At the age of 19 she suffered a spinal injury which had a severe impact on her physical abilities. She then decided to take a different direction and enrolled on various computer courses and gained RSA qualifications. She worked in various administrative roles until she found her ideal job at Caia Park Partnership Ltd as Assistant Coordinator, where she is now a Senior Administrator within the personnel department.
