Jessica scoops up Prizes

Jessica FletcherAs well as graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences from Bangor University, Jessica Fletcher a 22 year old graduate from Little Sutton, Cheshire is a multi- prize winning student.
She has won the School of Biological Sciences Prize 2010 which is awarded for the highest marks in the School of Biological Sciences for which she received £200 and the IBMS President’s Prize 2010 for the best graduating Biomedical Science student..

“I am extremely delighted; winning the awards is an added bonus to gaining a first class degree in Biomedical Science. I fully committed myself to the course and worked very hard throughout the four years,” said Jessica.

“The Biomedical Science degree at Bangor University is closely linked with the Pathology Department at Ysbyty Gwynedd and provided the opportunity to complete a year in industry working at the hospital, gaining valuable training and experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working there and it helped immensely with my final year,” she explains.

Merfyn Williams, Senior Lecturer and Senior Biomedical Scientist at the School of Biological Sciences said: "Jessica has worked extremely hard throughout her 4 year course and has proved to be an exemplary model for future students to aim and aspire to. Her achievements have proved that hard work and dedication brings significant rewards and Jessica has a bright future ahead as a Biomedical Science graduate."

Jessica has already been awarded the School of Biological Sciences Honours Project Conference Award 2010 for the best Biomedical Science Honours Project Presentation.

In her second year, Jessica was awarded the Society of General Microbiology Prize 2008,which was for the best Microbiology work in second year and the Hartsheath Prize 2008 awarded to the Best second year student in Molecular Biology or Biomedical Science.

Jessica added: “The best thing about my time at the University was discovering new areas of academic interest that I had not previously considered or come across."

Jessica chose to study at Bangor University as it was the right distance so that she could live independently but easily visit home.

“I looked at Universities in both England and Wales, but my ultimate choice was Bangor due to the atmosphere of the University and the city as a whole. The degree on offer encompassed everything I was looking for as it covered a number of interesting subject areas and is an IBMS accredited course,” she said.

She is now currently looking for a job as a Biomedical Scientist, but in the future would like to continue with post graduate study in Cancer Research.

Jessica attended Weatherhead High School Media Arts College in Wallasey and Birkenhead Sixth Form College in Prenton, Wirral.
