Kimberley Pemberton, a Bangor University Lingusitics student has been awarded one of the University’s most prestigious Prizes. The twenty-one year old student from Bolton was awarded one of five Dr John Robert Jones Prizes awarded to the best graduating student across all disciplines within the University. She received a cheque for £1,000.
Kim says that she came to Bangor as: “Of the open days I attended, Bangor was by far the most inviting and friendliest university I saw. It was clear that the staff here not only had a genuine interest in their subject, but that they were also keen to share that interest with their students.”
Her reaction to the news that she was to receive the prize was: “ Complete shock! When I found out I’d been nominated, it was completely unexpected and I really didn’t think I’d win. But now that the shock has died down a bit I’m absolutely delighted.”
“Coming to university has really increased my confidence, and I’m so grateful to my family and to those at school who encouraged me to come here. I’d like to thank them, because without them I would never have had the confidence.”
“I’ve made some fantastic friends in Bangor, and it’s become like home for me now. I’ve loved living in such a scenic location, and having the opportunity to explore the surrounding area in North Wales.
“The best thing about the course was that it introduced me to a lot of new topics, and really broadened my view of linguistics as a whole. I enjoyed all of the topics, but I particularly liked modules which focussed on language and cognition, as that wasn’t something
I’d really thought about before, and it sort of challenged me to think about linguistics in a new way which was great!”
Kimberley, who is a former student of Thornleigh Salesian College, hopes to work for a couple of years to save enough to come back to Bangor University to study a Masters course.
