Richard’s looking forward to new sustainability role

Richard GormanA prize winning graduate who has achieved a First Class Honours degree is moving on to a new role this month as a Sabbatical Officer at Bangor University’s Students’ Union

Richard Gorman from Hooton in Ellesmere Port has been elected Vice President – Societies & Sustainability for the next academic year. His role with the Union ties in well with his Sustainable Development degree course, and he is looking forward to the challenge.

Richard chose to study at Bangor because of its location and the surrounding environment. He said, “It’s in a truly unique location with a diverse range of beautiful environments. Also, the course was interesting and presented many different opportunities.

“During my degree I went on field trips every year both in the UK and further afield to Spain, Belgium and The Netherlands. I also undertook work placements, spending four weeks with Action Wirral Rivers in my first year and five weeks in Slovakia in my second year.” As well as working hard in his degree studies Richard also found time to work with ‘Sustainable Gwynedd Gynaladwy’ conducting research into Sustainable Local food in Gwynedd. He was awarded a prize for his dissertation by the organisation upon his graduation.

Richard added, “Coming to university has helped me to develop as a person. I’ve made some great friends and gained a lot of experience so it was definitely the right decision to make!”

Once Richard’s role as a Sabbatical Officer comes to an end he hopes to continue with his studies and is considering pursuing a PhD.
