I graduated in physics from the University of Mosul in 1996 and later obtained a MSc. in laser physics at the University of Technology in Baghdad, Iraq. Since 2003, I have been employed as an assistant lecturer in the physics department at the University of Sulaimani.  In 2009 I was nominated by ministry of higher education and scientific research for PhD scholarship and I  am currently in my second year. My research field in laser physics is investigating optical properties of the most common and important type of semiconductor lasers which are commonly known as VCSELs.

Why Bangor?

There were several reasons behind choosing Bangor. Firstly, the existence of the research field which I am interested in  and secondly, the School of Electronic Engineering in Bangor University is highly ranked in the UK. Thirdly, the nature and location of Bangor – it is a very quiet city, very safe and cheap, and an ideal city for students who are moving here with their family and children.

Why did you get involved in the International Student Ambassador scheme?

I’ve been teaching for more than 10 years and I always encouraged and supported students in their studies, and provided them with a success strategies. Now that I am a student again, I am happy to offer my help and share my own experiences with new and prospective international students at Bangor University.

As an Ambassador our main duties are helping and supporting new and prospective students by providing them with information about living and studying in Bangor. We will also playing a part in the organisation of social events for international students.

In addition, I think the scheme is a great way to learn more about the University and is a great confidence builder which looks fantastic on your CV.

How do you hope to help students at Bangor?

After living and studying in Bangor for more than two years I would like to help new students to overcome any difficulties and help them to enjoy their time staying in a fantastic place such as North Wales.

Best thing about Bangor?

Well there are many great things, but the most important is that the Welsh people here in this community are very respectful and very friendly. Also, Bangor is located in sensational landscape surrounded by nice mountains, with rich history, culture; it really is the city of learning, as it is often called!

Advice for prospective international students?

Studying abroad is full of surprises, especially at the beginning, but with the time everything will change and you will enjoy the change of lifestyle - this is the nature of life! I would say that if you are looking to develop your educational schemes, research and communication skills and enjoy your degree, then come and join Bangor University and you will get more than you expect.

The future….

First of all I hope to finish my PhD research project successfully by next year, then going back to my country and hopefully taking part in developing our university ( University of Sulaimani)  with the new skills and experiences that I have gained here in Bangor University.
