Student life in Bangor

Samuel Rogers - PhD in English Literature

SamuelBackground...

My name is Samuel Rogers and I'm studying a PhD in English Literature. I’m from the south of England, and came to Wales in 2005 as an undergraduate student. My doctoral research looks at ideas of place and identity in twentieth-century British poetry.

Why choose Bangor?

I’ve been here so long that I can’t quite remember! I think I wanted to study in a small city rather than a metropolis, and also I love being by the coast.

Why get involved in the International Student Ambassador scheme?

To meet some of Bangor’s many international students and help them feel at home in the UK.

What's your role as an Ambassador?

To welcome and support international students as they arrive and settle in. As the only British ambassador, I also have a duty to provide encyclopaedic knowledge of UK culture!

I hope to help students get over any initial obstacles and anxieties, so that they can focus on their studies.

Best thing about Bangor?

The university is the best thing about Bangor, of course.

Advice for new international students?

When you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask.

Hopes for the future?

After I have finished my PhD I hope to remain in the academic community and work as a lecturer.
