Excellence Scholarship Award Winners
Some of Bangor University’s brightest first year students have had their academic achievement at A-Level recognised with the University’s most prestigious scholarship award.
The Bangor University Excellence Scholarship is awarded to new undergraduate students from the UK and EU who achieve the highest academic attainment upon entry in the relevant subject areas.
Twelve students recently received Excellence Scholarships ranging in value from £3,000 to £4,500.

Eddy Reynolds - English Literature
Eddy Reynolds is 20 from Nottingham and studied at Joseph Whitaker School in Mansfield. He is now studying English Literature at Bangor, and is in his third year.
"I heard about Bangor from a friend, and then I came here on an open day. I really liked the area, and the school seemed very friendly."

Caroline Simon - Media Studies
Caroline Simon is 20 from Wrexham, and studied at Darland High School. She is now in her third year studying Media Studies at Bangor.
"I came here on an open day and was really impressed. The staff were all very welcoming, and the equipment available to students was great. It’s not too far from home either, only about an hour and 30 minutes."

Charlotte Wells - Enironmental Conservation
Charlotte Wells is 23 from Bletchingley in Surrey, and studied at Plumpton College. She is in her third year currently studying Environmental Conservation.
"I researched universities on the internet and came across Bangor. I came here on an open day, and seeing the university and the surrounding area really helped me make my decision. The staff seemed very organized, and the course was of great interest to me."

Lindsey-Jane Redhead - Media and Journalism
Lindsey-Jane Redhead is 21 and from Yorkshire, she studied at Bede 6th Form City of Sunderland College, and is in her third year studying Media and Journalism.
"During my first year of 6th form college we had to do a course called Improving Skills, we were given a list of universities to research, and Bangor was on the list. Bangor stood out to me because I was able to choose Media and Journalism on an equal level, and you can choose modules from other areas like theatre and film."

Richard Belcher - Forestry
Richard Belcher is 24 from Worthing near Brighton in West Sussex. He studied at Chatsmore Catholic High School until the age of 16, then went to study at Enfield Capel Manor College. He is currently in his third year studying Forestry.
"I heard about the university from a lecturer at college, he’d studied Forestry here and highly recommended the course. I then came here on an open day, and really liked it. Not many universities offer a course in Forestry, and the facilities here are great."

Eleth Peate - Communications and Journalism
My name is Eleth Peate, I’m 21 and originally from Golan near Porthmadog in North Wales. I’m studying Communications and Journalism at Bangor.
"I came here on an open day and found the department very friendly and welcoming. Bangor is also close enough to home so I can take my washing back every now and then!"

Joshua Simpson - Law with Business Studies
Joshua Simpson, 19 from Anglesey, is on his second year of a LLB Law with Business Studies degree at Bangor Law School.
"When I attended an Open Day, I could see how much of a friendly atmosphere there was amongst the school after speaking to Peer Guides and the Lecturers."

"The lecturers are always willing to help, and most go out of their way to help students. Everyone at Bangor is so friendly and there is a homely atmosphere here."

Jonathon Rawson - Criminology and Criminal Justice
Jonathon Rawson, 20, from Dolgarrog near Conwy, is studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at Bangor’s School of Social Sciences.
"This is a fantastic course. It has a brilliant structure and a selection of great modules to choose from. . There is also a great team of lecturers and staff within the school, which make a fantastic learning experience. I have met so many new people and had the opportunity to get involved in activities such as Open Days and I have developed lots of new skills, including academic research skills."

Richard McKay, 22 from Thatcham, near Reading is studying Sociology
"One of my friends from home came here two years before I did, and I visited them on several occasions. I loved the city and the area, and the student life at Bangor. I chose Bangor because I knew that it would make for an amazing university experience. Also, it’s cheap to live here!"

Nicola Jayne Owen - Chemistry
Nicola Jayne Owen, 21, from Anglesey, is studying Chemistry at Bangor University. She is now in her second year and hopes to go on to teach after finishing her degree.
"In a relatively small year it is a lot easier for the lecturers to get to know everyone and it is always easy to get help if you have a problem. The school is full of friendly and welcoming lecturers and staff – students are guaranteed to feel at home and have a lot of fun during their time here."

Amy Want - Psychology
Amy Want, 19, was awarded an Excellence Scholarship to help her during her first year studying Psychology at Bangor. She was one of the eleven students who won a scholarship, worth up to £5,000, after she gained four grade A’s at A Level. She said: “When I found out I’d won I was amazed and happy – I didn’t expect it at all. It took a while to sink in!

Elen Ifan - Welsh and English Literature
Elen Ifan, 20, is a second year student from Rhoose, near Barry, studying Welsh and English Literature.
"Both Welsh and English are really helpful and friendly, with some talented lecturers who really get you interested in the subjects and texts. The ‘study groups’ that the School of English advise us to create helps students talk about the work outside of the lectures and help each other, while also getting to know each other better."

Simon Sykes - Zoology
Paraglider Simon Sykes, 19, from Surrey, is currently ranked 6th in Britain and has been selected as part of the Great Britain Team that will compete in the Paragliding Accuracy World Championships. Every year, the University supports students with sporting ability by offering a number of Sports Scholarships for students studying for any degree. Simon was one of the lucky students who were awarded one of the coveted Sports Scholarships in 2010.

Jak Cornthwaite - Coastal Geography
Jak Conrthwaite, 18, from Baxenden, was one of four students who won a Sports Scholarship this year. The University supports students with sporting ability by offering a number of Sports Scholarships every year for students studying for any degree. Jak already a very successful sailor and is currently ranked 11th in the Under 21’s category, Great Britain Team, for Laser Standard European Champs in Sweden.

Ben Toovey, 20, from Surrey is in his second year of a BSc Psychology degree at Bangor University.
"I heard about Bangor from The Times Online Good University Guide while searching for the best psychology departments - Bangor was very highly ranked. I checked the University website and courses, as well as current student opinion on other websites such as thestudentroom.com and finally decided that it was the best place to study. Add in a fantastic open day experience, and my choice was set in stone."

"The School of Chemistry is a smaller department in comparison to others in Bangor, but is definitely very friendly and has a great atmosphere-everyone knows everyone and we have a right laugh in and out of lectures. Plus I got a £500 bursary just for doing Chemistry - bonus!"
