School of Theology and Religious Studies
Although John’s Gospel has traditionally been regarded as the least apocalyptic document in the New Testament, this colloquium will explore ways in which the apocalyptic traditions of Judaism may have contributed to the Gospel’s outlook and some of its most distinctive motifs. The colloquium will bring together scholars in the fields of Jewish apocalyptic and Johannine studies to engage in the first extended discussion of the relationship between John’s Gospel and Jewish apocalyptic thought.
Speakers: John Ashton, Ian Boxall, April DeConick, Jörg Frey, Robin Griffith-Jones, Robert G. Hall, Jutta Leonhardt-Balzer, Judith Lieu, Benjamin Reynolds, Christopher Rowland, Loren Stuckenbruck, Catrin Williams.
By examining how John appropriates some of the patterns and beliefs current in Jewish apocalyptic, this colloquium promises to make a significant contribution to the discussion of the Fourth Gospel’s origins, its emergence from Judaism, and the distinctiveness of its theology.
