School of Theology and Religious Studies
During his visit to Bangor to receive an honorary doctorate, Nobel prizewinner Desmond Tutu, former Archbishop of Capetown, made time to meet with members of the School of Theology and Religious Studies. The meeting occurred during a special convocation on 10 June celebrating the university’s 125th anniversary.
Archbishop Tutu is perhaps one of the best known humanitarians in the world, and it was gratifying to hear him note his appreciation for the support given by the people of Wales during the apartheid struggle. He also made it quite explicit that his Christian faith was the basis of all that he has attempted and achieved for justice and reconciliation in South Africa and beyond.
According to Dr Robert Pope, Head of the School, "It was a unique and happy occasion not only for the University but for the School of Theology and Religious Studies as well. We were thrilled by Dr Tutu’s affirmation of the work we are doing, and of the importance of academic theology in a world where religion is called to be a source of reconciliation rather than conflict".
