This study is an investigation of self-declaratory pronouncements in Jewish and early Christian texts. It provides the first comprehensive analysis of Jewish interpretations of the expression ‘I am he’, based on an examination of material from the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, Qumran, the Targumim, rabbinic traditions, and Samaritan texts. The study places the ‘I am’ sayings attributed to Jesus in Synoptic and Johannine traditions within the broader context of early Judaism, and widens the scope of discussion by examining the function and interrelationship of these sayings in the christology of the gospels of Mark and John.
