Dr Jerry Hunter of the School of Welsh and his new documentary series

Image of Jerry HunterFollowing the success of their previous collaboration, a BAFTA award-winning team has once again joined-up to produce a documentary series on Wales and America.  Cymru a Rhyfel Cartref America focused on Wales and the American Civil War, and the latest production concentrates on Wales and the American slave trade.

Produced by Ifor ap Glyn of Caernarfon-based media company Cwmni Da and researched and presented by Dr Jerry Hunter, Senior Lecturer in the School of Welsh, America Gaeth a’r Cymry (‘American Slavery and the Welsh’) is a groundbreaking exploration of the relationship between Wales and the American slave trade.  The first instalment will be televised with English subtitles at 9.00 p.m. on Tuesday, 24 October on S4C.

And once again, a book based on the documnentary series is soon to be published, this time on Flintshire-born Robert Everett who emigrated to America in 1823 who vigorously opposed the slave trade.  Dr Hunter’s last book, Llwch Cenhedloedd, which was based on his research into the documentary series on Wales and the American Civil War, was named Book of the Year by Arts Council Wales and the Welsh Academy.
