July 2007: Congratulations, Siân and Scott!
Siân Cleaver has been awarded the Dr John RobertsJones Prize, the most prestigious prize awarded by Bangor University to its graduates.
On behalf of the School of Welsh, University of Wales, Bangor, Professor Gerwyn Wiliams, Head of School, commented:
"The School of Welsh is delighted with Siân Cleaver's success. She gained a brilliant First Class Honours degree in Welsh Language and Literature and the John Morris-Jones prize which is awarded annually to the student who achieves the best degree result within the School. It is no surprise that she has now won the Dr John Robert Jones Prize which is the most significant award that Bangor University can present to its graduates. Siân's achievement is even greater when it is realised that she has learnt Welsh as a second language and mastered it to a very high level. The result proves once more how well mature students can perform academically. This is the second year in succession for a graduate from within the School of Welsh to win this prestigious prize and it is a clear sign that both staff and students of the School are committed to achieving the very highest academic standards."
Another student currently enjoying a lot of success is Scott Rowley. A Welsh learner, he won the Learner’s Medal at the annual Inter-Collegiate Eisteddfod earlier this year and has now earned a place in the final round of the Welsh Learner of the Year Competition.
Scott Rowley was born and raised in Deeside. These days he is studying for a degree in Welsh and French and is the co-ordinatorof the Flintshire playschemes every summer. He hopes that his success in reaching the final of this competition, in his local county, will be an inspiration to non-Welsh speakers to take an interest in the Welsh language and culture
The winner will be announced during the Flintshire National Eisteddfod.
Pob lwc, Scott!
