Professor David N. Thomas joined the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University in 1996 where he has held the Established Chair of Marine Biology since 2006. In 2019, he was appointed to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Impact).

His academic research has focussed mainly on two themes:

1) The ecology and biogeochemistry of sea ice covered waters of the Southern and Arctic Oceans and the Baltic Sea.
2) The connectivity between catchment soils, rivers and coastal waters in the UK and Finland. 

His current research is as Co-I on a NERC highlight topic project looking at microplastics as a vector for carrying microbial communities and potentially pathogens.

He is a member of the NERC Science Committee and Chairs the Programme Advisory Group of the NERC Changing Arctic Ocean Programme.

From 2009 to 2013 he held an Academy of Finland Distinguished Professorship at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) in Helsinki. He still holds a visiting Research Professorship there. From 2013 to 2019 he Directed the Sêr Cymru National Research Network for Low Carbon Energy and the Environment (www.nrn-lcee.ac.uk). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRBS) and Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (FLSW).
