The Stables Conference Centre, Penpont, Brecon, LD3 8EU

The Brecknock Society and Bangor University’s Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates are pleased to announce details of a one-day conference to explore the history of Breconshire estates from the perspective of landlord and tenant.

Hosted in the grounds of Penpont, one of Breconshire’s most prominent country houses, the day will consist of a series of short presentations on the history and influence of estates including Llangoed, Penpont, Treberfydd and Tredegar, with sessions on estate maps (including Robert Johnson’s 1587 survey of the manors of Crickhowell and Tretower), archives, local history, portraiture, architecture, the break-up of estates and the tenant experience.

This event forms part of the 2017 Brecknock History Festival organised by the Brecknock History Forum: throughout September there will be a variety of local history events relating to the theme of Breconshire estates.  A full programme will be published in early August as a special edition of the Forum’s newsletter, Hanes.

Members of the public are warmly invited to join us for what should be a fascinating exploration of the region’s history.

The conference fee is £10 per person (£8 for members of the Brecknock Society).  Capacity is strictly limited, so please book your place as soon as possible.

Tea and coffee and a light lunch (cost around £8) are not included in the conference fee but will be available to purchase at the venue.  Alternatively, feel free to bring your own. Please inform us when booking if you require lunch.

To book online please visit the SHOP.

To pay by post, please send a cheque payable to the Brecknock Society to Dr. Shaun Evans, Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates, College of Arts and Humanities, Bangor University, Gwynedd, LL57 2DG.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, 9th September.
