Professor Jones CBE grew up near Mynydd Bodafon on Anglesey where he still has family. He has been President of the School of Art, Institute of Chicago 1986-92 and 1996-2008 - but served also as Rector of the Royal College of Art from 1992-96; previously Director of the Glasgow School of Art.

He is a member of the Foreign Secretary's Advisory Group on Human Rights; Chair of the UN sub-committee on the prevention of torture; he received an OBE in 2004 for services to the prevention of torture and the promotion of religious liberty.
