Struggles for independence in Spain are not a new but the referendum on self-determination in Catalonia on the 1st of October has created a constitutional crisis of unprecedented dimensions in the post-Franco period. As a legal text, however, the Spanish Constitution of 1978 cannot be understood without considering the pressures that separatisms have exerted on Spanish politics, culture and society through the twentieth century until today. In this event, Hywel Williams MP (Chair of the all-party parliamentary group on Catalonia) and leading scholar in contemporary Spain Dr Helena Miguélez-Carballeira (Bangor University) will discuss the Catalan referendum and its consequences from historical, cultural and political perspectives.

This event is free to attend and open to the general public, but seating is limited.
