Summary
A practical introduction to the basic principles of writing plain, correct Welsh aimed at the public.
Audience
Anyone using written Welsh at work when dealing with the public (private or public sector).
Content
On the course we will be:
- Discussing of the importance of writing plain Welsh which is easily understood by the general public;
- Looking at the basic principles of plain Welsh, focusing on:
- how to make Welsh medium documents easier to read and understand;
- how to adapt your language register depending on the task at hand and target audience;
- vocabulary and technical terms;
- using English medium sources – how to avoid the influence of English language patterns when writing in Welsh;
- using an appropriate language register focusing on the use of verbs.
- Having a go – an opportunity to put these principles into action when writing a piece relating to your role.
Tutor
Eleri Hughes is Head Tutor of the Language Skills Unit at Canolfan Bedwyr, and has vast experience of teaching language skills courses. Over the past 25 years, she has taught at Trinity College, Carmarthen; Patagonia in Argentina; Cardiff University and at Nant Gwrtheryn Language Centre. In 2015 she was awarded a Bangor University Teaching Fellowship for outstanding contribution to teaching and pastoral care.
