Top of the Bench competition, October 2017 – January 2018

This exciting national chemistry competition involves competing in a regional final (Bangor) which is a Chemistry themed quiz competition. Each school will be allowed to enter one team comprising two year 9, one year 10 and one year 11 pupils. Regional winners will be invited to take part in the UK National Final.

Bangor Science Festival, 10 - 18 March 2018

Salters Festival of Chemistry 1st May 2018

The Salters’ festival of Chemistry is an initiative of the Salters Institute, who’s aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. This event is for years 7 and 8.

Schools Analyst Competition, 3rd May 2018

Regional heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry “Schools Analyst Competition”. Teams are required to undertake various practical analytical determinations based on problems relevant to industrial or social needs. Each competition aims to provide some familiar and unfamiliar tasks. In this way, it is hoped that the competitors will learn new skills, as well as demonstrate their existing knowledge, skills and aptitude for analytical science.

Schools Analyst Competition National Final, 20th and 21st June 2018

We are delighted to be hosting the National Final of the RSC Schools Analyst Competition in 2018. This is the culmination of the hard fought regional events hosted all over the country throughout the year. At the final schools from all over the UK will compete for the winners trophy of this very prestigious competition.

Chemistry Pharmaceutical, 3rd and 4th July 2018

Approximately 35,000 metric tonnes of Aspirin are produced and consumed annually, enough to make over 100 billion standard aspirin tablets every year. Nowadays aspirin is not only used as a pain killer but has also been proposed as effective in reducing the incidence of heart disease. This practical workshop will run on two days with the same programme each day and will include:

  • An introduction for Year 12 students to the synthesis of one of the oldest medicines, aspirin.
  • Analysis of the purity of aspirin using specialist techniques not used in school. This year’s event includes a Spectroscopy session. Here students will be introduced to MS, IR and NMR spectroscopy, preparing them for the Organic A level module in Year 13.Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

RSC Educational Coordinator for Wales

The Royal Society of Chemistry Regional Co-ordinator for chemistry activities is now based at the School of Chemistry at Bangor. The RSC is very keen to involve the general public in non-academic science as well as engaging with would-be science teachers and current teachers of science at Primary and Secondary school levels. Workshops for fun chemistry sessions are all available free of charge for Primary and Secondary schools. The RSC also runs CPD courses for teachers.
