Module UXS-3091:
Creative Practice Dissertation

Overall aims and purpose

The final work can take either a critical or a creative/practice-based form, but in either case must be based on a substantial piece of research undertaken by the group. The module cannot be taken with UXS 3090. Students will register for the module as groups of three who have already agreed to work together before the module commences. Groups of two are acceptable, although students should check with the module co-ordinator prior to registering. In this module the groups work with their assigned supervisor towards a creative work equivalent to 15,000 word written element (agreed with supervisor), and individual reports detailing production and contribution to the project. An individual group proposal detailing the project aims and objectives will be submitted in semester 1 and individual reports (totalling 2000 words) detailing the pre-production, production and post-production phases of the project will be submitted at the end of semester 2.

Course content

This module develops from the second year module UXS 2099. To do this module you have to have taken UXS 2099 OR UXS 2092.

Assessment Criteria

Submitted work is adequate and shows an acceptable level of competence as follows: Generally accurate but with omissions and errors. Assertions are made without clear supporting evidence or reasoning. Has structure but is lacking in clarity and therefore relies on the reader to make links and assumptions. Draws on a relatively narrow range of material.

good

Good: 50% +. Submitted work is competent throughout and occasionally distinguished by superior style, approach and choice of supporting materials. It demonstrates: Good structure and logically developed arguments. At least in parts draws on material that has been sourced and assessed as a result of independent study, or in a way unique to the student. Assertions are, in the main, backed by evidence and sound reasoning. Accuracy and presentation in an appropriate academic style. Very Good: 60% +. Submitted work is competent throughout and distinguished by superior style, approach and choice of supporting materials. It demonstrates: Very good structure and logically developed arguments. Draws on material that has been sourced and assessed as a result of independent study, or in a way unique to the student. Assertions are backed by evidence and sound reasoning. Accuracy and presentation in an appropriate academic style.

excellent

Submitted work is of an outstanding quality and excellent in one or more of the following ways: Has originality of exposition with the student's own thinking being readily apparent. Provides clear evidence of extensive and relevant independent study. Arguments are laid down with clarity and provide the reader with successive stages of consideration to reach conclusions.

Learning outcomes

  1. Work independently to deadline over a sustained period of time.
  2. Work effectively as part of a team and contribute on an equitable basis to the work of the team.
  3. Evaluate group dynamics and comment self-reflexively on the strengths and weaknesses of the student's own contribution to the group.
  4. Apply a range of study skills and methodologies appropriate to research in the Arts and Humanities.
  5. Define a coherent research question, and design and implement a programme of study to investigate this question.
  6. Embed a substantial piece of academic or practice-based research within an appropriate set of cultural, social, institutional, economic and/or critical frameworks.

Hours
  1. 1 x 2 hour lecture per week for the first five weeks of autumn semester 2. 3 hours of contact periods with supervisor (usually 15mins per week with supervisor)
