About This Course
This EdD Educational Leadership taught doctorate is designed to allow Headteachers who have successfully gained a MSc in Educational Leadership to complete their studies at doctoral level and is taught in partnership by the School of Education, Bangor University and Yr Athrofa: Institute of Education, University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). This programme has been approved by the National Education Leadership Academy (Wales).
Students will undertake an extended, independent, critical and evaluative research project on a relevant and appropriate academic topic of interest in the field of school leadership. This project will make an original research contribution to the field of knowledge and be worthy of wider, external dissemination.

What will you study on this course?
Graduates from the MSc Educational Leadership programme will be able to identify important areas for investigation based on school self-evaluation data and determine the actions required to lead and sustain school improvement.
Alongside a detailed knowledge of the principles and practice of leadership within the current educational agenda at local, national and global levels students will enhance their critical understanding of the links between leadership theory, pedagogy and practice and develop a robust knowledge of close to practice research approaches and related methods.The programme will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of key leadership issues in the current school and political context in Wales and provide a comprehensive understanding of relevant research and scholarly approaches applicable to practice and school improvement. In particular students will develop an informed knowledge of how the results of this application may improve pupils’ outcomes and develop research policy and practice.
Graduates from the EdD Educational Leadership taught doctorate will undertake a research project at doctoral level reflecting appropriate skills of assimilation, synthesis, argument, communication and presentation.
The student will produce a thesis that establishes the present state of research knowledge in a defined area and makes a significant contribution to that research knowledge. The thesis will demonstrate a deep and insightful research-based knowledge of their particular chosen topic for research and critically evaluate a breadth of accumulated research information and interpretations, drawn from a wide range of sources.
Students will also be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of relevant leadership and management theoretical and conceptual considerations underpinning their research project and understand and apply appropriate ethical standards.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Students will have regular meetings with supervisor whilst undertaking self-study. Assessment is via an in-depth thesis.

International Year Zero: HSD GPA 2.0 OR SAT 1500+
International Year 1: HSD GPA 3.0 OR SAT 500+ each section OR ACTs 26+
Undergraduate Courses: HSD GPA 3.0 OR SAT 550+ each section OR ACTs 26+
Postgraduate Courses: Bachelor Degree GPA of 3.0. GRE not required
PhD/Research Course: Masters Degree

Applicants from USA need NOT provide additional evidence of English Language ability, if previous education was with English medium of instruction. Otherwise, an IELTS overall 6.0 with 5.5 in each component or equivalent is normally required (some courses may require a higher score).
The EdD in Educational Leadership is only available for individuals who are registered on the New / Acting Headteacher Programme.
The programme will support Headteachers during their headship and contribute to increased retention in the profession and raising educational standards.

- ERW (Carmarthenshire, Neath and Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Swansea councils).
