Overall aims and purpose
- Trace the development of the Personal Social Services in England and Wales.
- Consider the importance of values in social work and social care, in particular the significance of anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice.
- Examine the personal social needs of service users such as children and families, older people, people with disabilities, and people who experience mental health problems.
- Examine how the personal social needs of service users are met by implementing policies such as 'care in the community', a 'mixed economy of welfare', and 'person centred caring' and co-production , with a specific focus on developments in Wales.
- Consider the future of the Personal Social Services in view of the current policies of government
This module traces the development of the Personal Social Services in Wales and England , and analyzes the organisation of the services.Consideration is given to the importance of values in social work and social care and in particular the emphasis given to anti-discriminatory and anti-oppresive practice.The contemporary social framework is explored, and the module also examines the personal social needs of groups such as children and families, older people , people with disabilities, and people who experience mental health problems.The module examines how these needs can be met by implementing policies such as Care in the Community and the Mixed Economy of Care.Consideration is given to developments and provision within some other European Union countries.The future of the Personal Social Services is also considered in view of current government policies.

In order to succeed at this level it is expected that students are able to meet the learning outcomes at a satisfactory standard. Students will have a general understanding of the development of the Personal Social Services, and the influence of Social Work values .The students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of personal social needs, and be able to satisfactorily describe the different methods and policies used to try to meet identified needs. Students will also be able to deal generally with the challenges facing the Personal Social Services in the future.
In order to succeed at this level it is expected that students are able to meet the learning outcomes at a good standard. Students will have a mature understanding of the development of the Personal Social Services, and the influence of Social Work values .The students will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of personal social needs, and be able to provide a good explanation of the different methods and policies used to try to meet identified needs. Students will also be able to examine in detail the challenges facing the Personal Social Services in the future
In order to succeed at this level it is expected that students are able to meet the learning outcomes at an excellent standard. Students will have a thorough understanding of the development of the Personal Social Services, and the influence of Social Work values. The students will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of personal social needs, and be able to provide a detailed explanation of the different methods and policies used to try to meet identified needs. Students will also be able to provide a comprehensive account of the challenges facing the Personal Social Services in the future.
Show awareness of how the Personal Social Services developed in England and Wales, and in particular of the influence of philanthropy, mutual support, and self help.
Recongnise the influence of traditional and radial value on social work and social care practice.
Understand the different social needs of service users.
Analyse the different methods used in trying to meet the needs of service users and the effect of different policies, particulary those developed in Wales.
Understand the difficulties and challenges facing the Personal Social Services in the future.

Teaching and Learning Strategy

- Critically evaluate the mixed economy of welfare and the interrelationships between health and social care and between the agencies, practitioners and individuals involved in their provision;
- Explain the origins and nature of the social organisation of healthcare and associated services in advanced industrialised and majority world societies globally;
- Evaluate the impact of difference and diversity on the incidence and experience of illness;
- Capacity to identify and describe the causes and consequences of social order and change in specific contexts.
- Use the theories and concepts of social policy and other social sciences to analyse policy problems and issues
- Undertake either on their own, or in collaboration with others, investigations of social questions, issues and problems, using statistical and other data derived from research publications.
- Analyse and discuss social policy and related issues distinguishing between normative and empirical questions
