Sport Science and Marketing BSc (Joint Hons)
Students on this broad ranging course will not only discover the science behind sport performance and the health benefits of physical activity and exercise but will also gain an insight into marketing management.
You may be interested in working with elite athletes to help improve their performance or want a better understanding of how science can be applied to sport to improve your coaching or teaching ability. You may want to develop your understanding of exercise as a medicine for people with health problems or want to promote the benefits of physical activity and exercise. Perhaps you are more interested in working in a marketing role within a sporting or health related business. This broad ranging course is uniquely designed to help you achieve these goals.
Drawing on 40 years of experience, we pride ourselves on offering many ‘hands on’ experiences in the laboratory or the sport coaching environment. This and our research-led curriculum, covering core Sport Science topics of physiology, psychology and biomechanics, will give you the knowledge and skills required for a career in the expanding exercise and sport market. With the addition of our sport and exercise specific employability programs and placements you have the opportunity to make yourself stand out from the crowd with a degree from one of the ‘original’ schools of sport science in the UK with a marketing element from Bangor Business School.
The Marketing element of the course will enable you to develop skills and knowledge in key strategic and operational aspects of marketing, and you’ll gain an awareness of the external marketing environment with a particular insight into the sporting business sector in its many guises.
The main aims of the Sports Science and Marketing degree in relation to sports science are:
- To provide students with a sport science focus to their studies;
- To develop the capability of students to acquire and express a dynamically-changing theoretical perspective of sport science which is supported by a current evidence-based understanding of the area;
- To provide students with the intellectual and practical (laboratory/testing) skill that will enable them to ask relevant questions in sport science and apply appropriate research skills to the answering of those questions;
- To develop students’ skills to be able to engage effectively at a personal level, and with others, in the sport science sector;
- To enable students to recognise how they might apply their academic and practical skills to sensitively work within the wider global and culturally diverse community, developing their capabilities through new experiences.
The main aims of the degree in relation to marketing are:
- The development of specialised knowledge and skills across a broad range of marketing applications, including brand management and loyalty, customer service, public relations, market research, consumer behaviour, marketing psychology and advertising strategy.
- The study of organisations, their management and the changing external global and culturally diverse environment in which they operate. The programme of study covers a wide range of organisations, including public, private and not-for-profit, together with a comprehensive range of sizes and organisational structures.
- The development of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and sensitive ethical principles in other specialist functional areas of business and managerial decision making, including business planning, corporate strategy, human resource management, organisational structure and design, and financial and risk management.
- The development of improved self-awareness and personal development appropriate to graduates with the potential to progress into professional careers in business, management or marketing. This includes the encouragement of positive and critical attitudes towards change and enterprise.
- Enhancement of lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large. This includes the development and enhancement of a range of general transferable intellectual and study skills, which whilst being highly appropriate to careers in business, management and marketing, are not exclusive to these career choices.

Year 1 of the course is all compulsory modules to give you a good grounding in sports science and marketing with optional modules in years 2 and 3 offering you the chance to focus on the elements of sport and management that interest you most. This Sports Science and Marketing degree will equip graduates with the opportunity to pursue an academic or professional career in Sport and Exercise Science. Graduates will be in a position to pursue Accredited Sports Scientist status with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Due to the specific skills and knowledge gained during the degree, graduates will be in a good position to pursue careers in the fitness and health industries. For those not wishing to take a sport science career route, graduates are expected to obtain employment in a variety of careers in consumer, business-to-business and non-profit marketing, particularly in businesses related to sport or health. As data handling, marketing communications and marketing management activities expand, marketing related graduates are expected to remain in high demand from employers. Some graduates from this programme are also expected to pursue careers in other business and management-related functions.

The Bangor Employability Award (BEA) and Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)
The Bangor Employability Award enables students to build on their transferable skills through the recognition of activities they become involved in during their university life. Students can gain points towards the award through extra-curricular activities such as volunteering, attending workshops or actively participating in the Students’ Union’s clubs and societies.
The HEAR is a final graduation report that all undergraduates receive. The report itemises all academic achievements and additional extra and co-curricular achievements. Academic achievements appear on the report automatically and students are able to note their eligible activities by using the online platform ‘My Employability Hub’. This ensures that future employers are made aware of the additional skills the student has gained outside of the curriculum.

When coming to University, you will have two main costs, Tuition Fees and Living Costs.
There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example:
- If you choose to study abroad or take the International Experience Year as part of your course.
- If you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for guest tickets (£12 each).
Course-specific additional costs
Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:
- Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
- Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
- Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips, Welcome Week trips.
How to apply through UCASApply online via UCAS
UCAS stands for Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. All university applications are processed through UCAS and then passed on to the universities listed.
Students may apply for a maximum of five courses. For Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary courses students are only allowed to apply for four courses.
The application form is found on the UCAS website, under ‘Apply’.
The early closing date is October 15 for all Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary students. The main closing date for all applications is January 15.
Your Personal Statement
Writing your Personal Statement is the part of the application form that requires most work. You are only allowed 47 lines or 500–550 words to explain why you wish to study the course and the skills you have that are essential for university study.
To write a successful personal statement for your UCAS application you must have a good understanding about the course and its content. Remember that you write only one personal statement for your five choices. Make sure that the courses are similar, if not the same, and make sure that you do not mention a specific course or university.

After you’ve applied
You should keep an eye on your application on UCAS ‘Track’. Offers from universities will appear on track and you will be able to accept or decline offers.
You can only reply when you have received all your decisions. The types of reply you can make are firm acceptance and insurance acceptance. Usually students reply in early May.
