Ifan is a print and online journalist turned lecturer. His research interests include the phenomenon of nationalism and the effect of communication technology on minority languages. He is currently researching nationalism in the Welsh periodical press in the 19th century, as well as the role of Welsh language current affairs websites in the present day.
Before joining the School of Creative Studies and Media in September 2012 he worked as a reporter and then deputy editor of Golwg Magazine, before becoming the editor of the Golwg 360 news website.
He is also a published author of three novels, and won the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff in 2008. Ifan has also adjudicated for the National Eisteddfod.
He was a member of the Assembly Commission’s News and Digital Information Taskforce which reported in 2017. He has also been invited to give evidence to the Assembly’s Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee.
As well as his research, he maintains an active role in Welsh journalism. He is a frequent contributor to Barn, Tu Chwith, Golwg 360, as well as broadcasters Radio Cymru and BBC Newyddion. He is the editor of Nation.Cymru, which covers Welsh politics current affairs from a cultural perspective.
He graduated with a journalism degree from Cardiff University in 2005, before embarking on an MA in creative writing which he passed with distinction in 2007. He is currently in the process of completing a PhD at the School of Welsh at Bangor University.
Ifan is the Marketing, NSS and Student Engagement Officer for the school.
