Professor Sian Hope’s area of expertise is in systems integration and software engineering.

Sian led the development of the Centre for Advanced Software Technology (CAST), a £17 million initiative resulting in a ‘Technium’ providing an avenue for research exploitation allied to Visualisation and Systems Integration. She is Technical director at CAS providing the link from the research domain in Computer Science to research & development (R&D) relevant to Industry and Business. The activity at CAST is led by Karen Padmore where major contracts with large corporations have been won and partnerships with S.M.E.s have been initiated.

Development work has been undertaken in CAST to further IP from the University on systems integration in the telecoms field and a patent filed. A spin-out company has been set up to exploit the patent. The Technium also provides incubator facilities of varying sizes and support to grow businesses in the sector.

Previous work on an EPSRC special initiative in Systems Integration project with Manchester and Sheffield Universities was further developed on a European project with German, French and Spanish partners. Subsequently, a KTP (knowledge transfer partnership) project with Vision Support was completed based on the resulting research knowledge which won the BEST in UK award from the DTI in 2007.

Collaboration with industry in applied research in Agile Methods for software development has led to a generic approach to change for people in the ICT sector being developed which has been rolled out to the sector via CAST.
