Overview
This module offers an in-depth exploration of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the most influential and controversial thinkers of the modern era. Nietzsche's ideas have had a profound impact on many areas of thought, including philosophy, literature, psychology, and politics. In this module, students will examine Nietzsche's major works and ideas, and engage with critical debates about his legacy and relevance today.
The module provides students with an opportunity to study a wide range of Nietzschean themes, including the critique of morality, the will to power, the eternal recurrence, the Ubermensch, and the relationship between art and life. Students will also consider Nietzsche's responses to key philosophical and cultural issues of his time, such as nihilism, Christianity, and the rise of science and technology.

For this assessment, you will undertake an independent study of 5000 words on a topic related to Nietzsche's philosophy. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of themes and concepts, such as the will to power, the death of God, the eternal recurrence, and the Ubermensch, among others. You can choose to focus on a specific aspect of Nietzsche's philosophy that interests you, or you can engage with broader questions about his philosophical system as a whole. To successfully complete this assessment, you should demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Nietzsche's philosophical ideas and their broader historical and cultural context. You should also be able to critically evaluate Nietzsche's contributions to philosophy and engage with the relevant secondary literature in a meaningful and insightful way. Ultimately, this assessment aims to provide you with an opportunity to explore a topic of interest in Nietzsche's philosophy and to develop your skills in independent research, critical thinking, and academic writing.
