SENRGy students home in on the environment!
ECO-MINDED Bangor University students have been learning how one housebuilder creates sustainable developments.
A dozen postgraduates visited Redrow Homes’ Goetre Uchaf development in Bangor to discover more about how environmental legislation applies to businesses, particularly those creating the communities of tomorrow.
Redrow is building 245 new homes at the site in Penrhosgarnedd and has designed a sustainable neighbourhood that takes into account its impact on the environment and local ecology.
The students, all studying for either an MBA in Environmental Management or MSc in Environmental and Business Management, were welcomed to the site by Redrow’s sustainability manager Nicola Owen and site manager Ken Evans.
A former course tutor at the university, Nicola guided the group through the development and spoke about the processes and practices that enable Redrow to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency.
She said: “It was great to take the students around the site and highlight all of the elements that go into creating a sustainable new community. We showed them how Redrow minimises and manages waste, prevents pollution and enhances and protects local ecology as well as the more proactive steps we take such as reducing emissions from transport and minimising use of electricity, gas and water.”
Professor Morag McDonald, head of the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography at Bangor University, said: “It was a very enjoyable visit for the students. Redrow demonstrated how environmental legislation applies to their building sites. It’s important for our students to see how the things they learn about in their lectures have a practical application for businesses.”
Nicola will also be on hand to assist the students as they progress with their courses, giving guest lectures to provide an industry perspective on their studies.
For more information on Redrow’s sustainability objectives see the annual sustainability report.
