Overall aims and purpose

This module is a general introduction to the research process open to qualified nurses / midwives & health visitors and non-nurses / health care professionals on an appropriate register. Given previous experience/ learning evidence; attendance in class may be negotiable.

Research Methods Searching skills for the appropriate literature Critical Evaluation of Research reports Relationships between Research, Theory and Practice Application of Research Findings to Practice Use of Research Concepts in Evaluating Practice Ethical and Legal Issues in Research Formulation of Research Proposals Basic Descriptive Statistics

Learning outcomes

  1. Understand the use of descriptive statistics in research.

  2. Critically read and evaluate published research literature

    1. Explain why research proposals are needed.
    1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of common research approaches used in health care.
    1. Evaluate the value of adopting multi-method approaches.
    1. Describe the main stages of the research process.
    1. Discuss the importance of each stage in the process.
    1. Describe and explain the need for the common sections of any research proposal.
  3. Analyse the stages involved in processing a research proposal, including gaining access and ethical approval.

  4. Recall the legal and ethical issues surrounding health care research.
