Overall aims and purpose

This module provides an opportunity for independent research by introducing frequently used approaches to address business and management issues - Dissertation or Business Plan. After a common substantial introduction participants will choose between:

A) Business Plan: exploring the process of establishing a venture from idea generation to the completion of a business plan. To follow the process of developing a business plan through its various stages, including business description and the market, development and production, sales and marketing, management team and the financial plan.


B) Dissertation: An opportunity to plan and accomplish a piece of work entailing an extensive review of the existing published theoretical and empirical literature on a clearly defined topic which may involve the collection of primary data and the application of quantitative or qualitative methods.

Notes: This module is NOT available to students on BA Business and ICT, BA Business and Law, or to students on joint honours degrees including a named subject in a school other than BBS. A version of this module is available through the medium of Welsh (ACB-3412).

Course content

In the first part of this module participants will discuss the elements of an effective Business Plan and Dissertation as well as issues and requirements around independent research. In the latter part of Semester 1 participants will then draft a proposal through which they will choose between:

a) Business Plan - the process involved in new venture creation and be required to develop a sustainable business plan


b) Dissertation - building a research project. This will ask them to formulate a research hypothesis, possibly complemented with appropriate validation through the collection and analysis of empirical data.

If participants choose the Business Plan they will receive further support via lectures, tutorials and drop-in sessions so that their final submission will provide insight into the nature and generation of business plans.

If participants choose the Dissertation they will receive further support through one to one supervision by a member of staff so that their final submission draws appropriately on its subject matter from any area of business management or marketing.

Assessment Criteria


D- to D+ (40-49%): Students must show that they have some grasp of the elements contributing towards a business related project. This will include some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements and some integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.

C- to C+

C- to C+ (50-59%): Students must demonstrate that they have a adequate grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements and adequate integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.


B- to B+ (60-69%): Students must show that they have a good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements and good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.


A- to A* (70% +): Students will have shown an excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements and excellent integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate key presentation and organisation skills. This through planning, editing and compiling a substantial research project report.

  2. Appreciate the purpose of key aspects of planning and carrying out research into business and management

  3. Synthesise and critically appraise a body of academic or industrial literature to generate a research proposal.

  4. Be aware of the issues facing businesses while focusing on a specific knowledge area while choosing across a wide spectrum of management topics, including but not limited by operations, human resources, marketing, entrepreneurship, information, and finance

Assessment Methods

COURSEWORK Research Project Report

Students will produce either a Business Plan OR a Dissertation (which is to include a literature review, research methods, data collection and analysis). Both of these will be based on feedback received from the Project Proposal stage.

COURSEWORK Project Proposal

A proposal for completing either a Business Plan or a dissertation based on instructions given in the lectures.


Teaching and Learning Strategy

Private study

130 hrs private study on Sem 1;

140 hrs private study on Sem 2.

Supervised time in studio/workshop

Regular supervision in Sem 2 of the progress of the Business Project either for the individual research project by an assigned supervisor; or for the business plan by the business planning tutor.


In Semester 1 the lectures will introduce the challenges of Business and Management research through two possible approaches - Business Plan and Dissertation. The common substantial introduction to a business management project will include the structure of a business plan and a Dissertation and their appropriate methodologies.
