Essential IT Skills

Overall aims and purpose

To develop competence in the use of application packages and network resources. To develop written English skills in particular academic writing best practices. To introduce students to the process of researching and producing scientific papers and to develop a range of cross-curriculum research and information retrieval skills.

Course content

  • Bangor University network resources. Down-loading and up-loading files. Academic resources. Areas: Computer Software, Hardware and Networking.

  • Fundamentals of word processing: page layout, textual effects, references, tables, drawing tools, contents page, spell checking, grammar checking.

  • Introduction to the research process. Identifying a topic and establishing research objectives. Information searching. Critical assessment of material retrieved. Preparing a first draft. Document review. Producing revisions. Structure of a technical report. Stylistic guidelines. Referencing conventions. Use of footnotes.

  • Introduction to presentation software e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint. Effective use of slides. Fundamental presentation techniques: Styles, Design, Animation effects. Use of graphical objects.

Make effective use of information from a range of appropriate sources.

Able to locate resources on the Bangor University network, Internet resources e.g. IEEE Explore and Science Direct. Use of search engines. Able to critically assess information retrieved and make use of cross-referencing techniques. Able to efficiently utilise local and remote resources. Effective use of search engines.

Make effective use of contemporary word processing and other office packages.

Able to create and save textual material using a word processor. Able to use a basic range of word processing techniques. Able to independently acquire advanced word processing techniques to solve document production problems. Able to use an extensive range of a word processor’s facilities.

Undertake thorough research and document findings in a scientific manner.

Able to research a topic utilising a variety of on-line and off-line resources. Able to critically review acquired research and identify strengths and weaknesses. Able to effectively revise the report in the light of the critical review. Able to find a variety of academically relevant information that discusses a topic in detail.

Produce a report that demonstrates an understanding of the academic process and offers insight on a technical subject.

Able to produce a scientific report based on research. Able to effectively utilise software tools and audio-visual aids to present technical information to an audience. Able to integrate appropriate reference material into a scientfic report and to comply with a standard academic referencing convention.
