Overall aims and purpose

The aim of this module is to help the student to build upon their underpinning knowledge of theory in relation to clinical skills. The student will develop and build upon the clinical skills required by mental health nurses for effective interaction with, and the care of individuals across the lifespan. The skills and knowledge acquired will prepare the student to provide evidence based nursing care and enable partnership working with individuals and their families. This module will build upon existing knowledge of the legal, ethical and organisational influences upon practice. The module will develop an understanding of therapeutic interventions which reflect the complexity of mental health care.

Course content

• Legal, ethical, organisational and professional frameworks and policies which influence mental health practice. • Implications of nursing people who are detained under Mental Health legislation and in secure settings. • Capacity and consent, maximising decision making across the lifespan. • Principles of supervision. • Working in collaboration and partnership.
• Pharmacology related to mental health nursing practice - self medication, concordance. • Theory and practice of the administration of medication according to professional guidelines and Health Board. • Research methods • Evidence based practice, knowledge transfer and research utilisation.
• Psychological assessment, formulation / care planning and interventions.
• Story telling/narratives – service user experiences. • Caring for the Carer - the role of the family and other carers in promoting and maintaining health. • Psychopharmacology and medication management.
• Assessing and meeting the needs of clients with co-morbid complex needs. • Crisis and relapse – intervention and risk management.
• Early intervention • Risk, models of suicide and self-harm. • Impact of abuse and trauma on people’s wellbeing. • Suicide prevention, intervention, harm reduction and positive risk taking. • The roles of services for individuals with an acute mental illness – community mental health teams, acute in-patient wards, PICU, Crisis/Home Treatment teams. • Healthcare informatics - enhancing healthcare organisation and delivery through appropriate record keeping, sharing and confidentiality • The role of effective partnership working using holistic care across professional and agency boundaries for people with mental health problems. • Professional values, beliefs and emotions and their impact upon practice.

Key clinical practice skills – with application to the person with a mental health problem: • maintaining a safe environment • eating, drinking, nutrition and hydration • comfort and sleep • moving and positioning • continence promotion and bowel and bladder care
• skin health and wound management • infection prevention and control • Physical health care to include measurements and appropriate responses • Clinical observation, assessment, critical thinking and decision-making

Understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module, with an ability to apply what is learnt in healthcare practice. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of D- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.

Good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module, with an ability to apply what is learnt in healthcare practice. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade C- in the Grading Criteria.

Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module, with an ability to apply what is learnt in healthcare practice. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade A- in the Grading Criteria.

Learning outcomes

    1. Identify and apply professional, legal and ethical requirements when using therapeutic interventions
    1. Discuss how professional relationships in mental health care settings are developed through appropriate communication, information sharing, ensuring respect and dignity.
    1. Identify and discuss evidence to support a range of therapeutic interventions used during the delivery of care within mental health settings.
    1. Discuss and engage in personal and professional development using concepts such as reflection, clinical supervision, lifelong learning and collaborative working and self-management.
