Name: Abu Bakar Khan
Course: MBA International Business
Why is Bangor University a good choice for the course you are studying?
I did my MBA in International business at Bangor and it was really good as I got the chance to interact with various professional people studying the same course. I think studying International Business here at Bangor University will give you good exposure due to the subjects and modules offered.
Tell us what you like about academic teaching quality at Bangor University?
The teaching quality at Bangor University is really good and it’s one of the best experiences I have had by far compared to all of my educational career to date. The quality of research work we do over here is quite good and the professors especially are quite cooperative, you just need to make an appointment and you’ll be facilitated by them. Overall the teaching quality is quite up to the standard.
What is the social life like in Bangor? Are you involved in any societies or sports teams? How easy it is to make friends here?
The social life at Bangor is quite good and I love going to Academi. We’ve also got the Gym which is up to the international standard. I joined the Dramatic Society and had a very good experience there!
Your experience of living in university accommodation OR private accommodation?
It is quite cheap to live in private accommodation around Bangor, both private and university accommodation both have their own perks and benefits. Student accommodation will give you a really different social circle and living in private accommodation will give you a wider range, according to my experiences. I lived in private accommodation but got a glimpse of university accommodation as well because most of my friends used to live in Garth halls. Bangor is quite inexpensive, it’s about £300-400 per month depending what and where you choose.
What do you think about Bangor and the surrounding area?
It’s a really really beautiful place in all of the UK! I always discuss with my friends that if we had taken admission anywhere in London we would have never ever seen this side of UK. One of the perks of coming to Bangor is that you can go all over the UK. This is a small town so you need to go to big cities and everything; you can cover more of the big cities rather than just living in one big city. There are so many beautiful places around such as Llandudno and other places starting with ‘ll’. You can see the sea, the mountains, snow – everything at one place - Bangor!
Any experience with the free support services available to international students at Bangor University?
I lost my BRP a few days back and my visa was about to be expired, I was really stressed out as to what will happen now because I travel frequently to different places. Initially everybody said you are in trouble as I was in trouble but then I went to Hen Goleg (main building for business school) where I was able to find it unexpectedly. Everyone is quite helpful. When I came here, I was facilitated by the Bangor university students who advised me to go for private accommodation. Your personal tutor is also very helpful. Other than that I don’t have any experience of using free support services.
Experience of getting part-time jobs in Bangor? How easy is it to get one?
I have worked part time in Bangor in various jobs including in the Deiniol centre, a utility store, a small departmental store and a convenience store. At the moment I currently work in a café and a takeaway restaurant. Jobs are quite easy to find and I have been lucky in that aspect.
How confident are you that Bangor university degree will help you in taking your career forward?
I have received 3 job offers already while pursuing my degree. I applied for Nissan in Sunderland, went through the assessment, and am now just waiting for their final response. I’ve also secured a PhD scholarship with a one year placement which I might or might not go for. The third offer I received was in Liverpool which was a fundraising internship opportunity. I’ve also applied to my previous workplace in Pakistan and they are ready to welcome me back to the same position, and my MBA will definitely help me get an accelerated promotion.
What is the highlight/best thing about being a student at Bangor?
I love the professors here, they have amazing personalities and a high tolerance level. They know how to maintain a student teacher relationship. I love the social circle here and the interaction with different nationalities and different kinds of people. I have developed really good relationships and contacts here and I believe I now have more friends from other nationalities than my own. I got to learn how to live alone and cook and it’s been an amazing experience which has helped me to discover the hidden cook inside me!
