IT Security - Protect your Data
Protect University Confidential Data by encrypting laptops and other mobile devices. Encryption software is a powerful way to protect confidential data by converting it into unreadable code that cannot be deciphered easily by unauthorised people.
Encrypting University Staff Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets
Laptops hold personal/sensitive data, even if you are unaware of it. Simple activities, such as reading email, can leave a trail of personal/sensitive data on the laptop. Laptops are vulnerable to being lost and stolen, or used by an unauthorised user; even with password protection, a person with the right skills could still access data held on the laptop without authority to do so. We must therefore take all steps possible to ensure that this data is only accessible to authorised persons. The recognised method of doing this is to encrypt the contents of the laptop, to make it exceptionally difficult to access data without authority.
Do I have to have my Laptop / Mobile Device Encrypted?
Yes – the University has made it mandatory for all University owned laptops and mobile devices to be encrypted.
