Linguistics has been taught at Bangor University since the 1960s, making us one of the first departments dedicated to the study of Linguistics in the UK. The formation of the School of Linguistics and English Language in 2003 drew together the long tradition of excellent teaching and research in Linguistics with the study of the English Language.
Today, the School of Linguistics and English Language is a vibrant and friendly department with staff who get to know their students as individuals and remain committed to high-quality teaching and have a strong research ethos.
A wide range of expertise
Academic staff provide expertise in wide range of disciplines within Linguistics and the English Language, including: psycholinguistics, language acquisition, bilingualism, cognitive linguistics and TEFL. Our staff are experienced in foundation teaching in introductory linguistics as well as providing more specialised support and teaching. We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
High quality teaching and student support
We are passionate about teaching and ensuring our students gain excellent skills in critical reading and research (including dedicated language facilities available to all students who study with us)
We achieved excellent results in the National Student Survey (NSS), scoring 100% for overall student satisfaction in the Linguistics subject area two years in a row (NSS 2016 and 2017). We have also received recognition from our students for the quality of our teaching – with two members of staff winning in this year’s Student Led Teaching Awards.
The School has an excellent record of research excellence in a wide range of areas. Academic staff in the School pursue research in two main areas: Bilingualism and Cognitive Linguistics.
The world-class quality of research carried out in the School has been confirmed by the 2014 REF (Research Excellence Framework), the most recent national assessment of research quality.
