The 8-Week Mindfulness Course
28th April - 30th June 2017
10.30am - 1.00pm each week plus a full day of practice on 10th June 2017
Mindfulness is developed by purposefully paying attention in a non-judgmental way to your experience of your body, your mind and the world around you. Mindfulness is about being awake and aware and living in the present, rather than dwelling in the past or anticipating the future.
Staying in touch with the present in this way, from one moment to the next, may lead you to experience yourself differently, perhaps feeling less stuck, or recognising more strength, balance and confidence in yourself. Most people completing the programme report lasting physical and psychological benefits including:
- Greater self-confidence and more acceptance of life as it is.
- An increased ability to cope effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations.
- An increased ability to relax and experience calm.
- More energy, enthusiasm and appreciation for life.
What does the course involve?
You will be taught in a group of about 20 - 24 by an experienced teacher, (sometimes there will be an assistant teacher). The course consists of 8 sessions of 2 or 2.5 hrs and one extended day of mostly silent practice. The teaching is largely experiential and consists of small and large group work.
The silent day usually takes place on a Saturday after session 6. There will also be daily home practice of one hour. You will have a work book and CDs to help you with your home practice.
Getting the most out of the course will require some work on your part. It requires a strong commitment to work on yourself through a gentle but rigorous daily discipline of meditation and movement practice. Making the commitment to devote the time needed for this personal exploration can feel difficult, but most people consider it worthwhile.
Once your application has been accepted, you will be invited to an ‘orientation’ session where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and to meet some of your fellow group members.
Who is the course for?
The course is suitable for most people. We all experience difficulty in our lives and the course can teach skills to help manage difficulty. Some participants come to the course because of a specific physical or mental heath problem; others come to help themselves with more general stresses. Sometimes people want to do the course for professional reasons as first step towards learning to use the approach to help others. We limit the number of professionals in each group and insist that everyone fully participates as themselves and not as an observer.
This is an important opportunity to learn more about the course before you commit yourself. You will meet your teacher and other course participants. There will also be the opportunity to experience a short meditation practice similar to the ones you will be learning on the course. This is the time to ask questions and to consider whether this is the right time in your life to undertake this course. Your teacher will help you with these decisions and may speak to you individually, before the orientation session or shortly afterwards if you or the teacher feels it necessary. Very occasionally we consider that the time is not right for an individual to attend the course, if this is the case your teacher will discuss it fully with you.
Support during the course
Should you experience any difficulties in connection with the course in between the sessions, your teacher will be available via email during the week and you can also make contact with them on the phone. It is important to use this as a resource rather than get stuck in any difficulty. The course teacher will not be able to offer therapeutic support. It can also be helpful to ask a friend, or if appropriate, a therapist, to be available for personal support during the course.
Rebecca Crane, PhD, MA, PFHEA, DipCot directs the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University and has played a leading role in its development since it was founded in 2001. Prior to this she worked in the mental health field as an Occupational Therapist and an integrative counsellor. She teaches and trains internationally in both Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and is a certified MBSR teacher with the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She is a Principal Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on how the evidence on mindfulness-based interventions can be translated into practice settings, with a particular focus on the influence and integrity of the teaching process. She has written Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: The CBT Distinctive Features Series; Routledge, 2009
Confidentiality and Record keeping
Discussions between the teacher and course participants will normally be held in complete confidence. The exception to this is if the teacher is sufficiently concerned about a matter with serious criminal, ethical or safety implications told to him/her by a course participant in which case s/he reserves the right to breach confidentiality by consulting with another responsible person. Every effort would be made to discuss this with the participant in the first instance.
All our teachers receive regular supervision for their work and therefore may discuss matters arising from the course in his/her own supervision. All reasonable care will be taken to ensure anonymity.
The teacher may keep process notes of the sessions as an aide memoire. These will be kept securely and all reasonable care to protect anonymity will be made. They will be destroyed at the end of the course.
Subsidised Rate - This is a self-select funded rate whereby your place will be financially supported. Please only select this rate if you are in receipt of benefits or would find it otherwise inaccessible to attend due to the fee. We will not ask for evidence of benefits or income at this stage but may ask for evidence to support your claim in the future.
Standard Rate - This is the market rate for this type of event and the rate we ask you to select if you are able.
