Your Experience at SML
The small size of our school means that we offer learning on a human scale, in small classes, where you get to know the staff and your fellow students. We offer a unique set of Three-Language degrees in addition to Single and Joint Honours formats, plus various other combined degrees. This sets us apart from most other language degree courses in the country, and our very large and varied range of module options enables us to tailor your degree to your personal needs. The flexibility of our degree structure, for instance, allows you to change your degree at the end of your first year if you wish to do so. In the UK-wide assessment of teaching quality, we were praised for “the high regard the students hold for the caring and supporting attitude of academic staff” as well as the “committed teaching observed in all sections”.
Foreign Exchange Programme
We have a strong and growing set of exchanges with foreign universities where you may spend part or all of your time abroad. Alternatively, if you want to work as an assistant, we have a very solid record of students gaining such placements, often in their preferred region. We pride ourselves on giving you the support you need during your residence abroad, and feedback from our students suggests that this is a particular strength of our department when compared with the experience of students from other universities. It thus goes without saying that our Modern Languages and Cultures students have an excellent track record in gaining employment after graduation! Excellent Support to Students
Bangor University has been rated the top university in the UK for the help and support provided to students (The Times Higher Educational Supplement) and the most recent Research Assessment Framework confirms our status as a world-class research institution. Not only do we also have one of the largest Peer Guiding schemes in the UK, but our Centre for Careers and Employability is recognised nationally as being one of the most active careers services in the UK, ensuring that over 87% of graduates enter employment or further study within six months.
An Affordable Place to Live
You can be assured that living in Bangor offers value for money, with the city offering cheaper accommodation and lower living costs than in most other university towns and cities. According to The Independent's A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges, Bangor is “one of the cheapest places in Britain”. And what is more, our location is one of the most beautiful university settings in the whole of the UK, being situated between the Snowdonia Mountains and the Menai Straits. It is a paradise both for bookworms and for sporty students!
