Profile of Paul Whittaker

Paul Whittaker
Honorary Research Fellow, CAWMS

Paul Whittaker was elected an honorary fellow of CAWMS in 2005. He is a graduate of Worcester College, Oxford and studied classical organ playing under Professor Karl Richter at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Munich. He completed his pioneering MA thesis on the Robert ap Huw manuscript, ‘British Museum, Additional Manuscript 14905: an Interpretation and Re-examination of the Music and Text’, at Bangor in 1974. Since taking early retirement from full-teaching in 2000, he has been engaged in full-time study of both Robert ap Huw’s book and the related ‘Iolo Morganwg manuscript’ (Lbl MS Add 14970). The fruits of his work have already led to several significant articles, and he is currently completing a book on the wider interpretation of cerdd dant harp tablature. His work has crucial implications not only for Welsh musicology, but also for early harp scholarship in general, and for studies of early modern notation and tablature in the West.
