Forestry careers promoted by Bangor University in The Times.
A leading national newspaper has highlighted the attraction of careers in forestry. The Graduate Careers section of The Times (published 26th May 2016) featured an article “Don’t rule out the rural: get out of town”. A quotation from Dr James Walmsley, Senior Lecturer in Forestry at Bangor University, emphasised that forestry graduates are “incredibly employable” given the shortage of skilled workers, particularly women. James also noted that three of the current 15 Bangor final year forestry students have already been offered jobs or places on graduate schemes before completing their degrees. He has since been corrected that the number is in fact four, not three!
The article focuses on Hayden Morrison who graduated from Bangor with BSc Forestry in 2014 and was immediately recruited by the company Aitchesse for a post based in southern Scotland. The long-term sustainability of the 30,000 hectares of forest managed by the company was stressed. In his role Hayden combines field work with the use of GIS mapping and computer-based modelling to forecast forest yield and revenues.
The article also highlighted the graduate trainee programme run by Forestry Commission England, the recruitment of graduates by the Woodland Trust and the wide range of roles in the commercial forestry sector.
