Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kijé Suite
Arutiunian: Trumpet Concerto
Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, ‘Pastoral’
Bari Gwilliam (trumpet)
Chris Collins (conductor)

The University Symphony Orchestra presents two 20th-century Soviet masterpieces alongside one of Beethoven’s greatest symphonies. Originally the score to a comedy film about an imaginary soldier invented as the result of a clerical error, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite is full of tongue-in-cheek humour and Russian colour. Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony is a magical evocation of the countryside in its many guises: a welcome taste of spring on this winter’s evening. In between, the orchestra is joined by local trumpet virtuoso Bari Gwilliam in the stirring and lyrical concerto by the Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian.
