Poulenc Gloria
Ravel Piano Concerto for the Left Hand
Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition

An evening of spectacular and evocative music from north-west Wales’ longestestablished symphony orchestra, joined by the Bangor University Chorus and locally-born and internationally-renowned pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones. Ravel wrote his stirring Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in 1932 for the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War: its journey from darkness to light evokes both the spirit of the times and Wittgenstein’s own personal trajectory.

The concert opens with Poulenc’s exciting and haunting Gloria for choir and orchestra, and concludes with one of the best known works in the repertoire: Mussorgsky’s ingenious Pictures at an Exhibition, based on paintings and designs by the Russian artist Viktor Hartmann, and rendered even more colourful in Ravel’s spectacular orchestration.
