The Rice Paper Diaries

Francesca Rhydderch and Yan Ying

Hong Kong, 1940. A Welsh family and a Chinese nanny are thrown into the havoc of military conflict. Charting the family’s journey from China to a coastal village in Wales, this is a poignant story of the effects of war on individual lives.

Inspired by her family’s history, Francesca Rhydderch reads from her award-winning novel (Wales Book of the Year Fiction Prize 2014), joined by Yan Ying whose Mandarin translation was recently published. Followed by discussion about the novel’s lived events, stories across continents, and the process of translation.

Reading: English and Mandarin. 1 hour.
