Bangor University’s gender equality commitment earns Athena SWAN award

Bangor University has been awarded a bronze award under the Athena SWAN Charter for Women in Science. The Athena SWAN awards recognise commitment and success in developing practices to support the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in academia.

To gain the Institutional Bronze award the University commits to the Charter’s six principals addressing gender inequality, the need for cultural change within an organisation and recognition of some of the problems facing women in STEMM sectors.

Professor John G Hughes, Vice-Chancellor, said: “The Athena SWAN project has been given full support by the University’s Executive and the award further enhances the University’s reputation in research and teaching in science. The award also demonstrates the University’s objective to ensure the participation and contribution of its entire staff”.

Athena SWAN initiatives across the University include developing career development guidelines and a career development web page for staff, and further developing female mentoring in the University through publicising the Women in University Mentoring Scheme and examining the potential of group mentoring for early career female academics.
