Research conducted at the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), more than 80% of our research was rated as being at least ‘internationally excellent’ with more than 25% being ‘world leading’.
The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography maintains a world-class reputation for research. Bangor University achieved a very strong performance in our subject areas in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment of UK universities.
Outputs of 69% of the school’s staff were submitted to REF2014 from across its research portfolio, including soil science, climate change impacts and mitigation, catchment science, environmental microbiology, environmental pollution, crop science and breeding, conservation, ecological economics, forest and agroforestry science, ecosystem services and geography.
Research Excellent Framework 2014
Units of Assessment: Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences; Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science (joint submissions with Aberystwyth University)
The two panels rated:
- > 80% of our research as at least ‘internationally excellent’
- > 25% of our research as ‘world-leading’
- 14th and 4th in the UK for research power*
*Research power = research quality x the number of staff submitted
We were especially pleased that the REF results graded the impact of our research on the economy, society and the environment so highly. Compared with the 2008 REF assessment, we enjoyed the fifth highest increase in research quality amongst all UK universities for the Environmental sciences submission.
The school provided five Impact Case Studies with more than two-thirds of these being rated as ‘outstanding in terms of their reach and significance’ (the highest possible category). In addition, the panels scored the whole of our ‘research environment’ as at least internationally excellent, recognising our important role in postgraduate student research, and the very high quality of our research facilities.
To ensure that we continue to maintain the quality of the research conducted at SENRGY we are ensuring that our facilites are suited to the task.
