Overview

Gerhard Riemann is a sociologist and has been working as professor of social work at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Technische Hochschule Nuremberg Georg Simon Ohm since 2007. He worked previously at social work departments of the Universities of Bamberg and Kassel in Germany.

Gerhard Riemann’s research interests include biographical research and the analysis of professional work. He has contributed to the development of qualitative research methods of data collection and analysis (in close collaboration with Fritz Schütze), especially in the fields of biographical research based on autobiographical narrative interviews and the study of professional work. He has also participated in the joint project of bridging professional practice (and practical case analyses) in social work on the one hand and traditions and procedures of interpretive (or reconstructive) social research on the other hand. The idea is that professional practice can profit a lot from a familiarity with ethnographic work, narrative analysis and the analysis of interaction just as social science can benefit from an awareness of the complexity and the problems of professional practitioners’ case analyses in their work with clients.

Research

In the last years Gerhard Riemann has participated in two European research projects in which colleagues from Bangor University were involved, too: (a) INVITE – New Ways of Biographical Counselling in Vocational Rehabilitative Training (Leonardo da Vinci programme, 2003 – 2006) and (b) EUROIDENTITIES – The Evolution of European identity: Using biographical methods to study the development of European identity, EU Seventh Framework Programme, 2008 – 2011 (http://www.euroidentities.org.) He is currently a member of the study group on “reconstructive social science” at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Study) at Delmenhorst, Germany (http://www.h-w-k.de/en/study-groups/reconstructive-social-science.html).
