Dr Aamer Sandoo

Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science

Background

Dr Aamer Sandoo is a Cardiovascular Physiologist specialising in clinical research involving patients with autoimmune disease, breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.  Aamer has a background in cardiac rehabilitation and has spent ten years managing several large clinical research projects in the NHS.  Aamer also has considerable expertise in using several non-invasive assessments of blood vessel function including assessment of microvascular perfusion using drug iontophoresis, flow-mediated dilatation, pulse-wave analysis, and carotid ultrasound.  Since joining Bangor University in 2014, Aamer was responsible for equipping the Schools Cardiovascular Laboratory with a state-of-the-art laser Doppler imaging scanner, high-resolution ultrasound scanner, and specialist software to measure blood vessel health.

Research Focus

Since completing his PhD in 2010, Aamer has rigorously examined the reasons why some patients with rheumatoid arthritis develop cardiovascular disease, and as such, has published several key papers in this area.  Aamer has a well-established collaboration with Prof. George Kitas from the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, Dudley.  Of particular note, Aamer is one of the original members of the ATTAC-RA consortium – an international group tasked with developing an RA-specific cardiovascular risk calculator suitable for use in many countries (http://atacc-ra.com/about-atacc-ra/).  Aamer also has a colloboration with the Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board's renal research team which includes Dr Jamie Macdonald and Dr Mahdi Jibani.

Research Impact

Aamer’s research projects have yielded numerous publications including original articles, editorials, invited systematic reviews, narrative reviews, research letters and case studies in high-impact factor, peer-reviewed journals of international standard (41 publications (21 as first author) 1519 citations). He has also presented at 23 conference proceedings at national and international conferences.  Aamer has also published two book chapters in collaboration with an international team of clinicians and scientists on Cardiac Involvement in Autoimmune, Rheumatologic and Inflammatory Conditions. Aamer is also an invited reviewer for 18 internationally recognised journals, and 2 funding bodies.  In addition, Aamer also teaches students on the MSc Rheumatology course in Kings College London.  These achievements represent his growing scientific profile in clinical cardiovascular physiology.
