My research focusses on climate change and conservation to meet the ever-increasing challenges on the natural world. Specifically, I am interested in multi-disciplinary research that involves close consultation with stakeholders to facilitate environmental restoration and make current anthropogenic practices more sustainable. I believe a combination of practical work and molecular research are key to achieving this.
I am a researcher on the Seas of Change project, which aims to develop an offshore mussel farming system in the Menai Strait, North Wales to meet future challenges to food security using cleaner and more sustainable practices. In my role I am developing research into monitoring temporal changes to planktonic shellfish compositions in North and South Wales using q-RT PCR methods. This is proving vital in understanding mussel settlement, feeding and production. I also undertake regular ship-based observation work at our offshore site and collect intertidal mussel samples for spawning analysis.
